Jun 2, 2023

AAD Staff

On May 31, in partnership with the Meridian International Center, the Academy held an event which explored the vision for a modernized diplomatic corps along with other areas of action as laid out in the recent Arizona State University report, Blueprints for a More Modern U.S. Diplomatic Service. In the program, CNN National Security Correspondent Kylie Atwood moderated a bipartisan panel discussion with Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on State Department and USAID Management, International Operations, and Bilateral International Development.

Co-author of the report, Ambassador Marc Grossman and Executive Director of the Una Chapman Cox Foundation, Ambassador Jo Ellen Powell highlighted how a revised mission for America’s diplomatic service, a requirement to increase professional capacities, a reimagined personnel system, and a Diplomatic Reserve Corps, can position U.S. statecraft to better respond to contemporary and forthcoming challenges. The program was supported by the Una Chapman Cox Foundation.
