George F. Kennan served as U.S. Ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1961 to 1963 and as U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from May to September 1952. A career Foreign Service Officer, Kennan formulated the policy of “containment,” the basic United States strategy for fighting the cold war (1947–1989) with the Soviet Union.
